US DOT Policy Supports Bicycling and Walking

Bicycle and pedestrian ways shall be established in new construction and reconstruction projects in all urbanized areas, with few exceptions.
–US Department of Transportation policy statement, March 2000

In a landmark new policy statement, the nation’s premier transportation policy and funding agency recognized that it is no longer acceptable to design transportation infrastructure solely for the automobile. The US Department of Transportation (US DOT) now expects every transportation agency to make accommodations for bicycling and walking a routine part of their planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance activities. This fact sheet (PDF, 276 KB) profiles communities which have improved the conditions for walking and bicycling, and lists funding and other resources available to help communities implement US DOT’s policy statement.
