SGVCOG Provides Free Online Residential and Commercial Energy Assessments to the San Gabriel Valley

by San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG)

Through the San Gabriel Valley Energy Wise Partnership (SGVEWP), the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG) has provided free, in-person energy assessments to residents, businesses, and nonprofits since 2015. This year, for the first time, the COG is conducting virtual energy assessments. The Zoom-based assessments have proven to be a safe, effective way to reach residents and increase energy efficiency in the San Gabriel Valley.

The SGVCOG

A joint powers authority, the SGVCOG works on issues of importance to its 30 member cities. In addition to energy efficiency, the COG works on issues related to transportation, homelessness, the environment, and water. The largest and most diverse sub-regional council of governments in Los Angeles County, the SGVCOG serves as a voice for its member cities and agencies and works to improve the quality of life for the more than 2 million residents living in the region.

The SGVEWP

The San Gabriel Valley Energy Wise Partnership (SGVEWP) brings together the SGVCOG, local utilities, and municipalities to provide resources and practical assistance in increasing energy efficiency and conservation. The SGVEWP also engages the local community and assists residents and businesses in becoming more energy efficient. The Partnership’s EASY Program provides residents with resources to conserve energy and to save money on utility bills. The SGV Go Green Program encourages local businesses, community organizations, schools, and libraries to implement energy efficiency and conservation practices. Businesses that participate are publicly recognized for their leadership and commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.

As part of the EASY and SGV Go Green programs, COG staff conduct individual energy assessments. These assessments include customized reports with specific recommendations on saving energy and water, from information on insulation, heating, cooling, and lighting to tips on reducing indoor and outdoor water usage. The assessments also connect residents and businesses to rebate and financing opportunities. While these assessments have traditionally been conducted in person, for the safety of residents and COG staff, the assessments are currently being conducted online via Zoom. Assessments are offered in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

Interested individuals, businesses, and nonprofits in the San Gabriel Valley can sign up for an energy assessment through the SGVEWP website here.
