Community Image Surveys

How the Survey Helps Create A More Livable Community

The Community Image Survey can help educate people about what makes a community more livable. In most cases, people will select images of pedestrian-, bicycle- and transit-friendly neighborhoods over car-dominated areas; Main Street shopping districts over huge malls and giant parking lots.

As a citizen participation tool, the survey process empowers residents to become a part of the community planning process, and makes people aware of the compromises inherent in design and land use decisions.

After learning about land use alternatives through the Community Image Survey, community members can then develop a common vision of the physical characteristics they would like to see in the future design of their community. This vision can then be incorporated into the community’s zoning ordinances, design guidelines and planning documents.
