Support for Smaller Agencies and Disadvantaged Communities:
Developing Effective Active Transportation Projects and Programs

Workshop Description

This workshop is intended to provide technical assistance to smaller agencies and disadvantaged communities to support development of impactful active transportation plans, programs and projects that can successfully compete for ATP funding. The focus will be on the elements that make for a high quality bicycle or pedestrian plan, project, or program (this workshop will not cover the ATP application process or guidelines).

The workshop is a free, full-day (8-hour) training, and will be delivered once in each of the 12 Caltrans districts, beginning in late March through early May of this year.

Topics Include:

  • Developing impactful bicycling and walking projects and encouragement programs: using best practices and cutting edge design to get the most bang for your buck
  • Designing and implementing an effective community engagement process
  • Low-cost strategies to develop a bicycle/pedestrian/active transportation plan
  • Effectively using health and crash data to design and justify your project, including SafeTREC TIMS, SWITRS, Cal EnviroScreen
  • Tools and strategies to predict and document bicycling and walking rates, including low-cost pre- and post-project user surveys
  • Top 10 Tips for successful grant proposals

Please note: this workshop is not focused on the ATP guidelines and application process.  Caltrans is offering a separate full-day training on how to prepare and submit applications for ATP Cycle 2 funding, which will cover the application form and instructions in depth.
