Energize Fresno

Creating an energy-independent Fresno, one neighborhood at a time.

Our Mission

We believe Fresno can be a hub for innovation, revitalization and prosperity for all. Energize Fresno is a new initiative to catalyze innovation in alternative energy infrastructure and lower energy costs for households and small businesses while driving new economic opportunities in one of the most disadvantaged communities in the state.

Why Fresno?

Fresno is a city that has a great diversity of cultures and languages as well as a large disparity in resident incomes. As the population continues to grow, increased pressures are placed on the current transportation system, local economy, housing stock, energy infrastructure, and other existing resources, exacerbating the financial strain on many citizens.

In response, Energize Fresno wants to prioritize projects that address these pressures, increasing the community’s energy and water efficiency while streamlining traffic flow, deploying advanced clean energy technologies, and creating jobs and economic opportunity in Fresno. Energize Fresno will supplement Fresno’s efforts for change by consolidating the selection process of high-quality, cost-effective city projects that contribute to community prosperity through means of an Advanced Energy Community.

Creating an Advanced Energy Community

The Energize Fresno team is designing a roadmap to deploy an Advanced Energy Community (AEC) in Fresno’s Downtown and Blackstone Corridor neighborhoods, or the Energy Opportunity Zone (EOZ), as pictured above.

With a $1.5 million planning grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC), we are designing an Integrated Community Resource Market that will enable Fresno, and eventually communities across California, to save energy, lower costs, and create jobs while preparing for the future through innovative financing, deeper energy retrofits, renewable energy deployment, and advanced technologies to increase grid reliability and resiliency.

Once this planning phase is complete, we hope to secure up to $14 million in additional grant funding from the CEC to fully implement the roadmap design and ultimately create a thriving district that models resource-efficient living and working in the City of Fresno.
